Canada is one of the stricter places in the world to sell a supplement. Here's what that means for you, and why we manufacture our products ourselves in West Kelowna, BC.
The NPN: approved before it's sold
Every natural health product sold legally in Canada needs an eight-digit Natural Product Number (NPN). Before a product gets one, Health Canada reviews its ingredients, doses, safety and the claims on the label. In the US, supplements don't need approval before they go on sale.
GMP: how it's made
The facility that makes, packages or labels a natural health product in Canada must be licensed and follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). That covers ingredient testing, batch records, cleanliness and being able to trace every lot.
"Made in Canada" vs "Manufactured in Canada"
The Competition Bureau has specific rules for origin claims. "Product of Canada" means almost everything in it is Canadian, and "Made in Canada" requires most of the cost to be Canadian. Many supplement ingredients simply aren't grown here, so we say what's true: our products are manufactured in Canada, in our own GMP facility in West Kelowna, BC.
Why it matters to you
- What's on the label is what's in the tub.
- The doses and claims were reviewed before the product was sold.
- Every batch can be traced back to how it was made.
How to check any product
Look for the NPN on the label, then search it in Health Canada's Licensed Natural Health Products Database. If a product sold in Canada has no NPN, that's worth asking about.
Manufactured by us since 2020
VNDL Project has made its own supplements in West Kelowna since 2020. Making them ourselves means we control the doses, the quality and the details, and we stand behind every scoop.
